Powerlines
Reshaping the energy system and bringing power to the public.
Powerlines is a non-governmental organization passionate about restructuring the energy landscape through utility regulation. They needed a way to educate their audience within the sector about their Theory of Change and the data they’ve gathered to drive and demonstrate these changes. The goal was to create a website that represented their brand with data visualizations that support their mission.

Discovery & Exploration.
My goals for this project were to understand the kind of information was needed to effectively help users understand the mission and to determine the must-haves for an MVP website. While conducting research, I also explored the format for presenting complex information (like map data visualization) and evaluate competitor platforms for best practices in user experience design and content presentation.
The organization wanted a brand that felt approachable, clean, and engaging. It was discussed that notes of yellow was the core color to be used to display their brand.

Data visualization designs
The organization has gathered data that they wanted to display that spoke to their three part Theory of Change. It was important to highlight how each visualization supported or provided more context to the change they’re exacting.
It made sense to display their data as a map so users can view the data state by state.
Scalable experience
To enable a more friendly interface, this is being built responsively to adapt across desktop and smartphone. With dense data, it was important to optimize the experience regardless of the viewing device.
Website
To help the organization establish itself and educate users on its mission, the following pages were designed: Home, Our Work, About Us, Contact, and a three-part Theory of Change, which includes Model Legislation, Political Strategy, and Community Engagement.
Next Steps & Learnings
Taking on the energy landscape was an amazing experience. I've handed off to the developers and would like to further user test to see if the data visualization reaches a broader audience easily. The team is currently filling in copy for the provided layouts.
The next thing the organization and I would like to incorporate later is a donation page from sponsors to further their cause.
